Flash Fiction
Amazing

When I inherited my grandmother’s violin, at age six, I started imagining becoming a great violinist like she was. Though I’d never had any interest in music before that, I suddenly had dreams of being first chair in the Boston Symphony, because that’s what Grammie had always talked about. I found out later that she had been first chair, substitute. In all her years with them she never got on stage once as first chair. It was a crushing blow, for about five minutes. I really had no interest in music and later in life, found out I was practically tone deaf anyway.

However the violin was lovely and in great shape and I kept it safe in my closet for years. Kept it safe meaning I forgot all about it, until we were suddenly in a pinch for money.

My husband had lost his job due to downsizing, and as we were having disagreements over what needed to be eliminated from our life, and me on the losing side... I remembered the violin. I could sell it! It would surely get us out of, debt, maybe even ahead!

As I pulled it out of the case, it actually still smelled like Grammie. I remembered her playing for me when I was a child. Suddenly it wasn’t my dream, or our way out of debt, it was my memories of my beloved Grandmother.

We found another way out of debt, and due to being financially solid finally, we thought about starting a family.

Trina was practically born making music. The first time I showed her Gram’s violin, at age two, she was so excited I had to hide it to keep her away. By five, she was playing it.

Tonight is her debut as First Chair. Life is so amazing.
