"It's a conspiracy."

“What’s a conspiracy?” asked Jane.

“The way they all sneak around pretending they aren’t working together,” said Alice, somewhat lost in thought.

“A conspiracy is sneaking?”

“Sneaking is always a conniving conspiracy!”

“What’s conniving?”

“Those idiots sneaking and making believe they aren’t being sneaky.”

“So conniving is making believe?”

Alice finally looked down at Jane, “What?”

“Making believe is conniving, which is sneaking, which is pretending, which is a conspiracy. Right? So Making believe is a conspiracy. Right?”

“Ah, no...” said Alice, confused

“But you just said that!”

“No. I just told you what all the words meant, not that that all meant the same thing all at the same time.”

“Huh, and people wonder why it’s so hard to learn English. I think it’s the people who teach it,” she walked away.

Alice stood there watching her sister walk down the hall, then thought, ‘Foiled by a five year old!’

As Alice made her way through college she never forgot that conversation. It eventually made her a very good and very successful twelfth grade teacher.

Jane on the other hand, became quite famous as a talk show host. She could talk anyone into a corner, and her audiences loved watching them squirm their way back out.
