Promises

“Where is it?” Dad said, holding out is hand, as if it would materialize there any second.

Danny knew he was in trouble, just not how much. “I can’t find it anywhere,” he said slowly, “I just used it once, in the garage even, to tighten my skateboard. I just don’t know what I did with it afterwards.

“You were supposed to put it back in the tool box.”

“I know, I just don’t remember. I thought I put it back, but since it’s not there I guess I was too excited about the skateboard and didn’t. I’ll keep looking!”

“You need to learn to be more responsible young man.”

“I will! I will find it and put it back, or I’ll use all my allowances till I have enough to get you a new one. I promise!”

“Well, I can hardly argue with that apology. You keep looking, and if it doesn’t show up we will discuss it again. You do seem to have taken this quite seriously now, I’m impressed,” Dad left the garage.

Danny stood there for a minute till he knew Dad was probably back in the den watching his TV show. Then he turned around, “OK,” he said angrily, “who took the wrench!”

Suddenly six sparkling lights appeared and immediately turned into six small leprechaun like creatures. The tallest speaking for the group, “We thought it was a key.”

“It was a wrench! A tool! It didn’t even look like a key!”

“Well, we haven’t seen too many keys, so we didn’t know…”

“I promised to help you, and I will! Don’t take things without checking! What did you do with it?”

“When it wasn’t a key, we fed it to Pippi.”

Danny sighed, plus, now he was actually afraid to ask who Pippi was…
