Wish me Luck

Happy birthday to me. Dread, dread. I lay in bed reluctant to get up. I know these people. No matter how many times I’ve told them I do not like surprises, nor being the center of attention, they just don’t get it. It’s real family! A “Happy Birthday” fine. Maybe a flower or two, fine! If only I could turn older without the surprises. I suspect it’s a surprise by how little I’ve heard over the last few days. Not even teasing about how old I am about to be! That’s unlike these people. The less that comes out of their mouths is the more their keeping in their heads, or behind certain other people’s backs. You think I don’t know these people? They handle me with kid gloves, however, I was actually there when three of them were born! So now I will spend my birthday waiting for the other shoe to drop.

The worst part is, yes, I have had many, many instances of this exact day, but, what if they finally take me seriously. I’m sure I’ll be disappointed. I know I don’t want the fuss, but… I don’t want to be forgotten either… stupid old lady.

Maybe that’s it. I am just being a stupid old lady, and, truth be told, a very lucky one. I honestly don’t know why anyone even puts up with me! I wouldn’t! Old, needy, picky, boring, I am all of those. Why do I dread this day so much?

Take a deep breath. I will get up and face the day whatever it brings. Tomorrow it will be over for another three-sixty-five (with any luck…) and I can go back to just being me. Breathe, breathe.

I hear someone up, where are my glasses… Wish me luck! Happy Birthday me!
