Someone is making something
Martha came in from the backyard where she’d been gardening. She spent a lot of time out there, creating, improving, and sometimes, just imagining what could be.

Her mind was elsewhere as she hung her work tunic on a hook in the mudroom and slid on her house slippers. Her reverie, however, was short-lived.

The all-to-familiar rattling of pots and pans told her that He was working in the kitchen again. Without her supervision, his efforts rarely turned out as planned. While they both shared the joy of creation, his work often needed a woman’s touch; something he refused to acknowledge.

Tact was important in these situations.

“Hi, honey. Whatcha doin?” she asked casually; her eyes scanning the piles of ingredients and a sink overflowing with debris.

“You are going to love this, Martha. I can’t wait to get it into the oven,” he said; visibly excited.

“It smells…interesting,” she said as she tried to peek around him to see what he was working on. He’d been on a binge lately. The other day he’d made some vegetarian stuff. After that, he started working with beef and fish. There was no telling what he was going to come up with next.

With a groan, he heaved a pile out of the mixing bowl and plopped it down on the counter where he started shaping it feverishly. He was like this when in the kitchen. He’d get an idea and then could hardly wait to see how it would come out.

He reached out and grabbed a spice shaker and liberally applied its contents.

“Oh, God!” she exclaimed when she saw what he’d been adding.

“What?”

“This isn’t a good idea,” she said.

“Nonsense,” he exclaimed. “This will make things much more interesting.” Again, he reached for the shaker labeled “EGO”.
