Memoirs of a Przewalski's Horse is the first in this series. I wrote this story myself as a sort of introduction to
The Box of Seven Hells Series, but the other stories in this folder . . . Just sit still, and if you have a little bit of time you can spare, I'll tell you how they came to be.
I don't know what day it was, and I don't care, but one day, I was sitting on a bench in a little park when I noticed a young girl nearby. She kept glancing toward me, taking a few steps away, coming back and glancing again.
She finally worked up her courage and came over to sit beside me. The first words out of her mouth surprised me, "You aren't Mister Trepidation, are you?"
Before I could say anything she continued, "I'm sorry, I know you're not. What do you do, anyway?"
"Oh, I make the rain fall and summon the snow down out of the sky. If you were to ask me how I manage to do that, I'd tell you I do it with words, see?"
A tiny smile quivered on her face for a moment as she spoke, "I don't have a PhD in literature or grammar, but if you would like to hear a good story, I'll tell you one."
That, my friend, is how I met Maria and put her words to paper just as she spoke them.
While inside the lantern box and The Box of Seven Hells, Maria learns the life stories of Betty Sue, Mister Lincoln and Delicious. She tells me their stories as if she were them herself. When she refers to the girl called Escape, this girl is just another part of Maria. On occasions, Escape will tell the story, referring to herself as Maria.
