From my private book of poems
I pace around the tree of tenderness
Wondering if it will bloom,
This year? Maybe next?

Its leaves are pointed and spiky
Not encouraging an approach
But lovely in color, shape.

Many years I have walked this circle
Closer, but farther each time
Never touching its fruit.

I know its taste is sweet and
Its fragrance is intoxicating.
But it is elusive to me.
