Chapter 1 - The Beauty Of Being Numb

Heading back to his room, Sebastian felt that all-too-familiar need for some alone time. The others in the dorm had suggested a drink and the weekly pub quiz at Das Kauzchen, which he knew was probably an ill-fated idea. Sure enough, within an hour and a couple of beers, he felt more isolated than ever. Even Aleks, the Ukrainian guy who Sebastian had connected with the most out of all of the other students so far, seemed exasperated with him. Maybe it was a bit abrupt to leave so soon, and it didn't help that he was rather blunt when he turned down a drink from one of the girls before leaving. However, it was that familiar, despairing feeling that he'd been accustomed to for many years.

Perhaps it was having secret, potentially frowned-upon desires that held him back? From ever since he could remember, Sebastian loved the idea of being dominated by powerful women. Their feet, their asses...anything that they could physically overwhelm him with. Not that he had ever experienced this in person, of course (not yet, at least). In fact, he had never dated a girl; never kissed a girl. If he had friends - not acquaintances but actual, real friends, then he'd be ridiculed for sure. Groaning as he hit his head against the pillow, unbuttoning the smart black shirt that he'd worn for the social gathering, Sebastian considered how he could justify this to Aleks. The two of them had been getting on well; Aleks had even agreed to join him at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training! It was doubtful he would now. Going to University was supposed to be an opportunity to meet new people, experience new things... yet here he was - all on his own. Again. Changing into a casual t-shirt and sweatpants, he put on some Aphex Twin, just to help clear his mind.

It had been a few weeks since starting at the University of Vienna, embarking on a Media Studies course. It wasn't as simple as feeling just nervous about the change - a tumultuous upheaval that promised both opportunity and problems in equal measure. No, it was more of a case of confirmation that he was a loner...someone who struggled to connect to others. To anyone. No doubt, his well-hidden sexual desires meant he had become increasingly guarded and numb over the years; even as an outwardly moody teenager, he was more enigmatic then anyone could have possibly imagined. Keeping people at arm's length was safer...better. It was easier to be blunt and sarcastic than open up with people and reveal potential weaknesses. Sighing and deciding to fix himself an evening snack from the kitchen - it still astounded him that most of the other students in his dorm could concoct little beyond basic noodles or pasta - he very nearly walked right into Rachel.

He gave her a blank stare before remembering his manners and asking how she was doing; she lived directly opposite him and up until now, he'd had little contact with her.

"I thought you were at Das Kauzchen tonight?" Rachel frowned as she tossed her brown hair over one shoulder. She stared at him, her expression hard-to-read.

Sebastian nodded, feeling uncomfortable with someone he barely knew. The way she was looking at him though - she seemed curious, interested in him. "I was actually going to make a snack. You want one?" His voice was its usual calm, almost robotic tone.

Giving him a smile and an interested look, Rachel followed him into the kitchen. Twelve students shared the community kitchen in their dorm, which was in House B of the well-populated student accommodation. Sebastian had been relieved to have been placed there - it meant having his own space, not needing to share a bedroom with anyone - unlike those in House A. Rachel started to chat, telling him some story about her childhood in Romania, which Sebastian struggled to stay focused on. He mopped a little sweat from his brow from the heat of the cooking unit, tidying his black hair while he finished serving up the omelettes. She talked a lot and didn't exactly invite discussion! Though he didn't really mind; he was fairly numb to most social interactions.

The more time he spent with Rachel, the more she seemed to giggle and enjoy his company. Feeling more at ease around her, he actually began to find himself not minding her company at all. In his heart, he could not say that she was a knockout or anything like that - in fact, he wasn't sure if he actually found her that attractive. Yet, he had noticed her sizeable ass, powerful-looking legs, her feet adorned with fuzzy slippers... Plus she had a nice, friendly face and the more time he spent with her, the more intrigued he was about her. Most importantly, she seemed to like him.

It wasn't until a few days later that he next saw her after a lecture on campus. Wearing a long coat and black boots, along with a smile on her face, she spotted him, insisting they walk back to their dorm together in House B. Asking Sebastian if he could fix her another snack like last time (the omelette with potato, cheese and mushrooms was apparently delicious), he felt unable to refuse - especially when she mentioned she had purchased some Romanian sausage for the occasion. Sebastian had been generally avoiding people as usual, although Aleks did not seem as offended as he feared about ditching him the other night. In fact, he'd agreed to a Jiu-Jitsu session the next day! Anyway, while Sebastian this time whipped up another omelette, enjoying the smell of the Romanian sausage frying, along with Rachel's animated voice waffling on. When she made a categorical, assumptive statement about German politics, he felt the need to correct her (being from Germany, he knew far more than she did on this topic), which seemed to flummox her.

"OK. Fine - I guess I can accept your view as... equal to mine on this one," Rachel finally stated, looking a little flustered as she took off her glasses and frowned, while Sebastian smiled inwardly. He knew that this was the closest she'd get to admitting he was right! After that, she viewed him a little differently, like he wasn't just this pushover like she expected him to be. Maybe this show of articulation and confidence was enough to earn him some respect. It was also enough for him to be invited to the pub, at Das Kauzchen, for Halloween drinks several days later.

Beforehand, Sebastian found himself pacing. He really did not want to go to this party - the last social gathering had not ended well, yet Rachel was so keen for him to come. Thinking it over, he reasoned that she clearly enjoyed his company - laughed when he was being dry or witty, obviously appreciated his cooking and the way she looked at him... sometimes it was like a lioness about to consume a gazelle! Though, not being an emotionally intelligent person, he wasn't totally sure what she truly wanted from him. He ended up enjoying the party more than he thought - mostly because Rachel seemed to appreciate his company, literally holding onto him, like he was a new possession or toy. So at least he wasn't ignored or left alone. Plus, she looked quite sexy as a witch, including wearing pantyhose! Other students seemed to flock around her, basking in her company and always reacting positively to her. One girl, Heather, was all over Rachel - almost as if she wanted to be with her. Still, with so many drinks that they shared, Sebastian didn't really mind, in fact it just made it clearer to him that he was kind of in awe of how socially confident Rachel was. Not the most beautiful woman, but certainly popular. Admittedly, he did find it a bit much when she kept insisting on him putting her arm around her, even when he was trying to carry over drinks. Still, it was the most fun he'd had in a social group that he could remember.

Both of them got pretty drunk that night. Staggering back home, Rachel invited him to 'watch a movie' in her room. It became soon clear to Sebastian that there was no movie in mind, even though he was initially confused when instead, she led him towards the bed and instructed him to lie down. She found it hilarious that he was even expecting an actual movie!

"You're so...fucking cute..." Rachel breathed into his ear as she began to straddle him. Thoughts were colliding in his head - was he actually cute? He knew he was strong - the Jiu-Jitsu training helped with that. He was OK looking, as far as he was concerned... why was he even thinking about this? Sebastian was experiencing sensory overload - this was the first time he'd been in such a situation and his body and mind were collectively unsure of what to do. "You OK?" She added after several minutes.

"Yeah., let's keep going..." Sebastian told her, hoping that his manhood would start to react soon, as she began kissing his neck and then fully in the mouth, using her tongue to slide against his. He slid his hands along her pantyhose, loving the texture of them against her strong, thick legs. Still, nothing going on downstairs. Although drunk, both of the first year students were acutely aware of his failure to rise.

Eventually, Rachel leaned back and sat onto the bed next to him, a look of slight concern on her face, though she brushed it off. Instead, they ended up chatting. He told her selected information from his childhood - from his father passing away, how difficult it was during the pandemic, his interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu... She did so too, including about some anger issues, from the past... Neither actually remembered falling asleep but Sebastian awoke with her arms wrapped around him, and feeling like they were an item, despite not being able to get an erection and sexually stimulate her.

Sebastian felt conflicted. He felt like he'd failed, like he wasn't a 'real' man - he had a chance to have sex with a woman and had not been up for the job. Yet, Rachel hadn't seemed to mind. In fact, she messaged him the very next day and clearly wanted to get to know him better, spend more time with him and if she was disappointed, she did not let on! The next time they tried, a few days later, Sebastian found that there was some stirring going on in his pants; not enough to be fully erect and attempt to penetrate her, but at least something. It was progress!

"Hey, Seb," Aleks had pulled him into his room so that they could have a private chat. He had only just recently clocked that Rachel and Sebastian were spending time together. "First of all, great Jiu-Jitsu session, man! You kicked my ass! But it was fun! Anyway...I've noticed you spending time with Rachel, right?" He continued after Sebastian nodded, looking awkward. "Just be, careful, yeah? I've seen how she is around other people..."

Taking a breath, Sebastian asked him for more information but Aleks merely shrugged, just assuring his friend that he was only looking out for him. The Ukranian student changed the subject and explained that his girlfriend, Jessie, was visiting later. Sebastian liked her - and although he couldn't help but be envious - he appreciated how right Aleks and Jessie were for one another.

Conflicted, Sebastian decided to talk to Rachel. Initially, she was annoyed that he hadn't replied to her on Instagram, but after explaining that he barely used this social media platform, she seemed OK about it. Anyway, before he could even say anything, Rachel interrupted and had something to confide in him, instead.

"Sebastian, please don't take this badly but there's something I should have told you. How I can put this.... OK, in the summer, before I came to Vienna, my doctor - a gynaecologist - well, he told me that I have an... well, an infection."

Slowly absorbing her words and trying to make sure he was understanding her properly, Sebastian stared, looking blank but feeling confused. "Is this your way of breaking things off?" He asked rather bluntly. Aleks was right... he should have listened to his Ukrainian buddy! Sebastian was not meant to be with someone; he was obviously too cold, blunt, sarcastic... he was better off safe and numb, alone...

"No, no...silly!" Rachel laughed and tied her brown hair behind her head, before adjusting her pantyhose a little. Massaging his toned arm with one soft hand, she explained that it was a bacterial infection and that she should have mentioned this before... but it did NOT mean that she wanted to break up. She was just getting to know him and wanted to develop things.

So, from that moment on, things developed!
