..that I am still capable of being ME..

THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND

The children, now grown, are failing to see
That I am still capable of - being ME!
They fuss and they worry that what I do
Is a bit of a waste, think I should get through.

Hang up the worries, the working, the woe;
I'm far from dead and still able to go!
Whatever I'm doing is just what I crave,
I'm active and happy, and nobody's slave!

I pay my own bills, and still have enough
To lend a few dollars when the going is tough;
I don't try to insert myself into your life,
I like mine as it is; so lay down the knife.

Don't cut apart all my hopes and my dreams!
I'm just not done living, however it seems.
I know you mean well and you think I'm old;
Your way of thinking makes my blood run cold.

For a few more years, let me keep trying
To live just for me, I'm not the one crying!
I'm settled in ways you know nothing about,
I've been there and done that, have no doubt.

No, I'm not done living, I'll keep trying to win;
I'm in pretty good shape for the shape I'm in!
So live your life, not mine, I'm trying to say,
You're family, I love you, let's keep it that way!
