A child ponders the advantages and disadvantages of growing his own coat.
This is an illustration for a story about a boy who imagines growing a fur coat.

If I Grew a Fur Coat

If I grew a fur coat that never came off
Like a cat or beaver or polar bear,
My friends might pet me, but I fear they’d scoff,
Just because I could never take it all off.

But if I grew a fur coat, I’d never get cold,
And my mom would not say, “Don’t forget..."
‘Course there’d be no pockets for money or billfold,
Yet it’s one coat I’d never outgrow or get old.

If I grew a fur coat that couldn’t be mislaid,
I’d always brush it one hundred and one strokes.
I'd never need to remember if it were plastic or suede,
Nor worry about needing a brand new upgrade.

So, I think it would be an idea that’s great
To develop a fur coat if only I could,
Because, although it might take a year to create,
To grow it would be worth that long wait.
