Recollections

The sun falls in waves
leaving men
dripping with sweat
like burning candles

black and white
striped denim chaffs
as they bear the sledges high
aching arms give way
and the hammers fall

The deep south summer
simmers wisteria on the vines
fragrance rises from the wilting blooms
the men remember

Black and white
chained side by side
they are all crushing lime stone
when the hammers fall
