Greece and America
λευκός

You spoke of the glory days
of Greece, the light-bearer,
Prometheus giving fire to the rest
of the world.

The top of the Acropolis
is covered with dusty white gravel,
cornerstones and pillars
worn down by Spartans,
Macedonians, Turks and tourists.

covered in white ash.

Somewhere Theseus sits in his wheelchair
and bathrobe, watching wheel of fortune.

The category is thing.
Why can't he remember?

America too,
once had the blinding potential
of an unblemished sheet
of titanium white paper,

quickly becoming yellow newsprint
scattered in the park or used now and then
to roll cigarettes by bitter old men.

The floor is covered in white ash.
