The long road in search of love
DISILLUSIONED

You said you loved me,
My first love.
But all you wanted were my marbles.
I saw you,
In the playground,
Gloating over Julie’s because they were bigger.
I fell out with you and love.

You said you loved me,
My teenage sweetheart.
But all you wanted were my records.
I caught you,
At that party,
Admiring Kate’s collection because it was better.
I fell out with you and love.

You said you loved me,
My holiday romance.
But all you wanted was a quick fling.
I lost you,
When the train departed,
Letters you promised to write never arriving.
I fell out with you and love.

You said you loved me,
My college Romeo.
But all you wanted was my virginity.
I caved in to you,
Gave you my all,
Then took a back seat as you cast your spell elsewhere.
I fell out with you and love.

You said you loved me,
My husband-to-be.
But all you wanted was my soul.
I couldn’t breathe,
In your cloying enclosure,
Your jealous obsession suffocating my spirit.
I fell out with you and love.

You said you loved me,
My secret lover.
But all you wanted was a diversion.
I succumbed to your charms,
Behind closed doors,
Risking everything until you tired of your plaything.
I fell out with you and love.

You say you love me,
My man of the moment.
But I wonder what it is you want from me.
Yes, I love you too,
With a heart that aches,
To hold you in my arms for eternity.
Will you fall out with me and love?
