MEMORIES OF HOME

As I lie here in this world of sand,
My gun ready, waiting for a command
To fire at will, to defend our post,
I think of home and what I miss most.

An evening walk, you at my side,
A night of promise with my bride;
A flutter of wings as we pass by;
The scent of roses brings a sigh.

Mist rises up from the waterfall,
The love we knew hard to recall;
A burst of gunfire, a rocket's whine..
No inspiration comes to mind.

And I fire back, and watch men fall;
War is hell, and that says it all..
Yet somehow I don't feel so alone,
There are always memories of home.
