I was working late on my latest case. But what I finally found wasn't what it seemed.
I was working in the lab, late one night. Actually, I had been working in the lab late for many nights in a row trying to figure things out. Tonight, however, was different. I needed to know who, what, how, when, and where; I didn't even know why! My eyes drooped with exhaustion, my head bobbed up and down as I struggled to stay awake. I stared at the table I’d been using. It was covered with the instruments of my trade. Pens and pencils were scattered in amongst papers upon which I'd written the data I’d accumulated. The floor was covered with piles of crumpled pages.
Suddenly, as I stared at the papers the data seemed to come to life! Finally I understood. My prayers were answered and my answer was clear. I even knew why! This was an amazing discovery! My murderer was unmistakably revealed, the lab had done its work!
I gazed at the pink elephants and large balloons made of cauliflower that adorned the field where I stood. beautiful wildflowers were everywhere! Happiness, sweet fulfilling happiness was mine! A huge dog, walking on his hind legs was bringing me ice cold lemonade. Unfortunately he was clumsy. The glass fell.
The sound of shattering glass and the tinkle as it bounced off the kitchen floor woke me. I was still at the kitchen table drooling on the beginnings of a short-story, the murder mystery, which had been assigned in my creative writing class that morning. The clock read four AM. My completion of the assignment had been a dream! No solutions came to mind. I sighed, rubbing my eyes, knowing there was a mystery to write and only three hours left to do it in. I shook my head in horror. Truly this was a frightening discovery!
