Warnings about wasting life.
Repeat This Life

I look around and ask
“What have I become?”
How did I slip so softly
To the bottom rung
Of this so-called existence
That passes off for life,
Where the pains from it
Bypass the cut of a knife?

So many dreams …
So many hopes …
Now life forever has me
Against the ropes.

I remember quite distinctly
Being a small child in wonder,
Never to be scared -
No mind to the thunder.
Back then, I had eyes
That were so bright
They could make quickly
A black hole white.

But now, I’ve seen so much
Through these eyes,
I’ve seen many hopeful dreams
Deteriorate into lies.
The field has changed
Due to mistakes of mine –
I would try to fix them
But I haven’t the time.

Now I’m down here
In this rat race,
Trying to keep up
And get out of last place;
Hoping my child
Doesn’t follow the same
Path filled with broken dreams
And a muffled pain.

I have the responsibility
To share my knowledge wealth,
To prevent my troubled past
From perpetuating itself.

My fate at this time
Appears to be sealed,
With a set of dreams
Apparently unfulfilled.

Let this be a warning
To all those on the edge
It’s a hell of a fall
When you slip off the edge …

I can scream and moan
About the pain and strife,
But you now have a chance
Not to repeat this life.
