This is a story about a really nice guy who doesn't finish last.
This Tale has no basis in truth except I put some of myself into the lead character. It certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing if the following story became non-fiction.
Hope you enjoy....

Well the day began like every other pathetically simplistic and repetitive day in my life. There I was at work sitting in my sorry excuse of a cubicle watching the paint dry on a newly painted wall in the south corner of the building. I was working on the annual budget for our dept, which you can imagine, sucked ass! Ted my brilliant but worrywart of a partner came in 9am like normal to bitch and complain about whatever. Normally I wouldn’t have minded his daily visit. His rants were entertaining. I keep waiting for his head to either turn a full 360 like in the exorcist or for it to implode.
"God Dammit Jim did you hear corporate wants to cut our budget since we are able to do it so under the budget last year. So they will pile more work on us for less money. He was getting redder with each word.
"Ted calm down I’m working on the new budget as we speak and don’t you think I would know about any cuts? Who told you this anyway? I already had a good ideal just wanted to confirm my suspicions.
"I was talking to Fred on the smoking patio. He told me its what he heard. He was dead on about the Merger with Astro industries remember? I got up from my desk motion for him to take a seat in one of the chairs across from my desk. This two was a ritual for us. My voice tone was low but very confidant.
"Ted your working your self up over nothing again! Look buddy, I leaned in closer to making sure the walls that had ears could not hear. I think Fred between you and me, loves pulling your chain, yes he was right about the merger but come on anyone that had a TV and watched CNN Business could see it was coming. Remember the year before Fred told us Mr. Spencer was steeping down and the company was going to be realigned. Reminding him of Fred's failed prediction seems to bring some color back to his face. I'm the head of this Dept unlike Fred I have real connections. If were getting cuts I'd know ok so stop stressing, its too dam early for it. I slapped him in the shoulder Hey let me get you some coffee.

Once I reached the break room I Stood in the doorway admiring Tabatha as she poured herself coffee. Seeing her for me was like those moments like in a movie where the beautiful blonde girl wipes her hair around in slow motion as she is washing a car or walking on the beach in a bathing suit. O.K. so she wasn’t blonde nor was she in a bathing suit, but you get the point. Tabatha or "Tabby" as she liked to be called was the most beautiful woman I've sort of known. Tabby had fantastic red hair that was shoulder length. Her green eyes were like emeralds. Her Face was round very proportionate to her body. She had a great body slim and athletic. Her breast were big I over heard her telling a friend once that she thought they were to big was she kidding. Hey I’m a breast guy cant help it. I’ve never seen her legs. She never wears shorts or even a casual dress on dress down day. I'm sure they are awesome.

She looked frazzled in fact the coffee she was holding was shaking a lot. Without thought I moved to her just as she was about to spill it. I took the coffee from her hands and placed it on the counter.
"Omg! I'm sorry she flashed a very fake smile at me. I have been a huge klutz all day today. I smiled a warm and inviting smile at her.
"Tabby its ok I'm glad I was there to catch it are you ok you looked frazzled."
" I'm ok you know lots going on at work. As if the weight of lie broke an invisible dam she started crying. Women have no clue what it does to most men to see a women crying. I instinctively pull her close to me and she cried into my shoulder. At that moment the entire world go have gone to hell and it wouldn't have mattered. I'm glad no one was around she was already having such a hard time and it would have embarrassed her for someone to see her like this. After a moment she pulled away and I handed her a napkin to dry her eyes. She laughed and smiled.
"Thank you Jim I must look like shit with my make up smeared all over my face". She took the napkin and started to wipe her eyes.
"I think you look beautiful Tabby you always do!" My compliment did wonders for her she seemed to stand a bit taller and gain some composure. Are you feeling better?"
" I am thanks to you Its amazing what a good cry can do. I need to go clean up my face. Thank you again for being so kind Jim. She gave me a hug and started out the door. As she reached the door She turned around and faced me. Hey Jim lets go to lunch today at 1100 ok? Now I’m pretty sure I looked like a deer caught in headlights cause I didn’t speak for a min. was she really asking me to lunch?
" Um sure that would be great ill meet you in the lobby at 11" I handed her coffee. Don't forget this."
"Thanks" and this time I saw a real smile I thought to myself clean up in aisle 4 I was putty. So I'll see you downstairs at 11" and she turned and walked away.

It was only 9:45 when I went back to my desk there was no more working I kept staring at the clock. I was in partial shock I’m sure she actually asked me to lunch. I laughed out loud a bit here I was a grown man feeling like a little boy with a crush. I jumped online and did some web surfing trying to find a place to go for lunch. I found the perfect spot. Then I called Ted and told him we wouldn't be doing lunch today he sounded a bit disappointed but I really didn't care. At 10:50 I closed down my computer and headed to the elevator. A few people in the elevator were talking about the up coming " All hands" meeting on Tue where the big wigs award prizes and give the motivational speech about the future.

When the elevator opened to the lobby I noticed her and smiled and she at me she had fixed her make up and now looked perfect. I walked toward her and asked her if she had ever been to a place called "Paradise" and she said she that she hadn't I told her she was going to love it. She grilled me about what type of restaurant was it and all I told her was she will enjoy it. We got to the there was a good size line and she made a commit that it was a popular place and I told her she has no clue. She asked if we would have time I told her its one of the perks of us being dept heads we can take longer lunches once in awhile. She smiled I’m sure with the day she was having that didn’t sound bad at all. The outside of the restaurant was nothing special at all. In fact it looked like one of the many wherehouses in this district. I could see it on Tabby's face she was not impressed and was probably questioning my taste and sanity. Any doubts she had faded away once we reached the top of the stairs.

A very pretty young woman in a stewardess uniform greeted us. As we walked past her she thanked us for flying "Paradise Airways". Tabby's eyes got bigger as she realized we were inside a real airplane. Another stewardess escorted us to our seats. Unlike real airplane seats these were roomy. I ordered a rum and coke and this surprised Tabby since we still had half the day left I told her I wasn’t planning on having more than one and she should live a little she thought about it and ordered the same. She noticed that out the window was playing a movie making it seem like we were flying over a very blue ocean.
"Jim this is amazing!" She said as she looked around taking in more of the decor. I smiled at her knowing a lot more was in store. Our drinks came and I toasted to us both having a much better day than it began. Then I asked the question that had been on my mind all day.
"Tabby why were you so upset today if you don't mind me asking?" She sighed, took a swallow of her drink.

"Well last night I caught my boyfriend in bed with a friend of mine, as you can imagine it was not a pretty scene!" Ok I'm no rocket scientist but her boyfriend had to be the most stupid S.O.B. to A) cheat on such a beautiful woman and B) cheat in the same house in the same bed he shared with his girlfriend. I hope she slugged him.

"Tabby I'm sorry what a jerk!" I put my hand on top of her and to my surprise she turned her hand so she could hold mine. One of the stewardess’s came over and told us our table was ready. We walk to the middle of the plane where there were stairs and as we exited the plane the first thing you notice is the temperature drops a lot because in one corner of the restaurant was a very large waterfall. At the bottom of the stairs were some women dresses in grass skirts placing leys on the heads of everyone as they exited the plane. Our table was right next to the waterfall. I noticed that she was shivering so I took my suit coat off and place it around her. She smiled at me as I sat down.
"I certainly see that the nice guy rep you have at work is not underrated.
"Dam I was trying for hard ass. We both laughed. After looking on the menu we both decided to share the seafood platter. The place was crowded but to me we were the only people in the restaurant.
"Your girlfriend must be so happy with you."
" Well she might if I had one I’m not exactly a head turner. I felt like I could slide right off the chair like melted butter but the facts were the facts. Look at me I'm tall but over weight and can be kind of shy.

"You are selling your self short really you have a lot to offer. My ex- he was one of those pretty boys against my better judgment I decided to go out with him. Look where I ended up! You know how you go to the mall see a pretty girl with a not so attractive guy and you wonder why? Well I'm one of those girls looks are not as important as personality. We talked about all kinds of different subjects over a fantastic lunch. Neither of us felt like going back in so we both called in and decided some miniature golf was in order.

So much I could write about and maybe I will latter but to sum it up from that day forward it’s been Tabby and me and were both so in love, chalk one up for the losers and nice people of the world
