Summary of this DVD...
Well it has a thin plot but let's try to write a summary, shall we?...Kelly works in a country/western bar as a singing waitress. Her friends, Alexa and Kaya, convince her to come to Ft. Lauderdale for spring break (Guess what she does?). Enter Justin...he's with his friends Brandon and Eddie. Kelly and Justin get together, and Justin tries to show he is a good guy. Scheming Alexa wants to change that though; Brandon runs lots of contests on the beach, only to get in trouble with the sexy beach patrolwoman; Nerdy Eddie wants to meet his online pen pal; and Kaya finds romance with charming bus boy, Carlos.
This type of DVD is good for...
The movie may not be great, but the extras are nice.
The cast of this DVD...
You all know that Kelly and Justin are from the American Idol television show, and this movie just serves to showcase their newfound stardom. The rest of the cast is made up of people with small movie and TV dossiers.
I recommend this DVD because...
If anything, it kills time.
Further Comments...
Well...If you come into this movie with low expectations, you won't be disappointed. The script is straight out of the 1960s. The movie just doesn't work in 2003. They missed the mark by some 40+ years. Ft. Lauderdale was just more entrancing in movies from the 60s (Note:I wasn't even born then, but I am a fan of the 60s teen movie genre). It just looks touristy here. You may be better off watching a movie from that era (I recommend Where The Boys Are, Palm Springs Weekend, and several others from that period). On the plus side, it is better than most beach films made in the 1980s (Spring Break, Where The Boys Are '84, and the like). Justin and Kelly do have some chemistry, but they aren't on the screen long enough together to show it off. The dance numbers are passable, and a few of the songs are okay. If you are a fan of American Idol, you may like this. And it is fairly squeaky clean, so it is fine for younger viewers (but beware, there is some suggestive dancing in this one). All in all, it is not as bad as some people have made it out to be, but that doesn't mean it is good either. It's watchable, and there are a few scenes I laughed at. Still, the script is thin and the plot has holes the size of craters. Perhaps if they had concentrated on the story and character development a little more, it would have worked.
