Summary of this Book...
This book is split into parts that deal with different aspects of writing poetry. Each part presents some idea, topic or poetic element along with sample poems and then some practical writing exercises related to that topic. Some of the topics covered include: Subjects for writing (i.e. family, death, erotic, places), Poetic elements (i.e. imagery, similie, metaphor, meter, repetition, revision), the writing life (i.e. writers block, self-doubt, getting published).
This type of Book is good for...
I think this is great for anyone wanting to write poetry, whether you've been at it for years or are just starting. It's easy to follow and clear for beginners, but refreshing and inspiring for others.
I especially liked...
The chapters where short enough to read through and then do the exercise in one sitting. Even if I only had a little while, I felt like I was learning something. But there is so much in each chapter that if I had the time I could really dig into it.
I also liked the authors' style of writing, very down to earth and quite like sitting in their classroom, I think.
I didn't like...
Some of the example poems they talk about aren't included in the book so if the reader wanted to read them, they'd have to go find them.
There is also a chapter on writing in the electronic age that is actually quite out-dated.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Write, write, write!
This Book made me feel...
Excited about poetry and it's different aspects, as well as my ability to write it. It gave me a lot of refreshing inspiration.
The author of this Book...
Kim Addonizio and Dorianne Laux
I recommend this Book because...
It is a great tool for anyone wanting to improve in writing poetry or learn more about poetry.
Further Comments...
I ate this book up-I could hardly wait until I had time again to read another chapter or do another exercise. One of my favorite parts was the last section is just writing exercises, they title it "Twenty-Minute Writing Exercises" and it was just that. They give you a sample poem and then a prompt for your own. I found some of them quite challenging, but in a good way. It is a book I'll put away but keep handy enough to use those prompts in the future, too.
