Summary of this Book...
A Coming of Age story of a Quaker boy becoming a man on a farm in Vermont just before the Great Depression.
This type of Book is good for...
It's an American Classic and shows the reality of life on the farm, it's good for teaching old values and learning about growing up.
I especially liked...
I liked everything in this book... But, especially, the way that Robert grows throughout the story.
I didn't like...
Some of the scences are tough. Sometimes life on the farm is difficult.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
The end is sad and happy at the same time. When I finished the book I wanted to read more and (as an adult) I wanted to share it with my young adult children. I've read it many times through the years and still love the story.
This Book made me feel...
Like I was there with him.
The author of this Book...
Robert Newton Peck
I recommend this Book because...
It's a very real view of life at that time and with Poor a poor Quaker family. It teaches some good lessons about life's values
I don't recommend this Book because...
Some of the scenes are graphic. As with life on any typical farm, there is death, there is pain, there is sex (animals mating). It's often reccomended for sixth grade reading. I think, if your sixth grader is going to read it, you need to read it with them or read it first because of how graphic it is in a couple of scenes. I read it for the first time in eigth grade and, thinking back, don't think I would have been ready for it when I was younger than that.
Further Comments...
Robert Newton Peck's, A Day No Pigs Would Die, is my all time favorite book. I've read it over and over again because I enjoy the journey back to simpler times when the main charecter, Robert, is a young man coming of age on a farm in Vermont, raised by poor Quaker parents.
Even though I've read the book many times, I still laugh and cry and feel his pain and triumph as he goes through mulitple events that were and are real to life on the farm.
