Summary of this Book...
A rich investment banker from high society finds himself in somewhat of a pickle after accidentally running down a boy in the bronx with his mistress. The story escalates to show racial and sociatal tensions in 1980's NYC. Don't let the plop blurb bore you though, I would have never read this book knowing that's what it was about.
This type of Book is good for...
people who thrive on social commentary at it's most bitter and people who can still muster a nervous laugh at the society surrounding them.
I especially liked...
the wording that created such precise vivid pictures in my mind and the attention to the smallest details making even the most mundane of things seem fascinating to read about. At one point it describes a hang over one of the characters have in such a way that I will never forget the image it brought to mind. This is the first book ever to make me totally fascinated by something so insignificant!
I didn't like...
that I could picture this story actually happening. In that aspect it's miserably depressing but it's better to laugh then cry I suppose so I will keep with the spirit of the book.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
read more from Tom Wolfe. This was the first book I read by him and it completely opened me up to a new world. I loved it.
This Book made me feel...
misanthropically amused.
The author of this Book...
has a fascinating style of writing. His wording and style are like nothing I've ever seen before. He certainly has talent in twisting things ever so slightly to make you see whole new perspectives.
I recommend this Book because...
it was brilliantly hilarious for people with dry biting social humor. I have a hard time coming up with anything bad to say which is unusual. It was written very masterfully and you can tell a lot of thought went into it.
I don't recommend this Book because...
there's a huge audience that wouldn't understand it or take offense to it as an attack on social values. This book is really written for people who thoroughly enjoy and gain from reading satire.
