Summary of this Book...
North Korean defector Soon Ok Lee relates the true story of her imprisonment in a forced labor camp, which resulted from honest performance of her duties. Upon refusal to give a powerful official more than his alloted ration of cloth, she found herself a victim of a heartlessly cruel system in which human life counts for nothing. Lee discusses her escape from North Korea and her new life of freedom in South Korea. Details of camp life, including the "sweatboxes" used to torture uncooperative prisoners, are provided. The importance of Lee's faith in Christ, which was nurtured in secret by her relatives who spoke of God in a kind of coded language, is a central theme throughout the book.
This type of Book is good for...
anyone who wants to learn about the abysmal state of human rights in North Korea. Because of its faith perspective, this book is ideal for Christian groups that wish to discuss human rights and martyrdom in the modern world. However, those of other faiths should not be discouraged from reading this book, because the human rights issues raised by the content of this book transcend differences in creed.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
to create free educational materials people could adapt to their own needs when teaching and learning about North Korean human rights. And I did ... the first "Gulag Meal" was held on the east coast of Canada in 2005. If you want a flexible model for promoting North Korean human rights in either sacred or secular settings, then go to http://gulagmeal.50webs.com.
