Summary of this Book...
A young farm boy named Eragon discovers a strange stone in a forbidden section of the mountains near his home. However, one night it hatches a dragon. Ignoring the fear-driven impulse to kill it, he instead decides to raise it like the Dragon Riders of old, hiding it from the people of his village. However, there are dangers greater than superstitious villagers involved in his decision to nuture the hatchling and soon he is thrown into a quest for which he didn't ask and must accept a responsibility for which he isn't ready.
This type of Book is good for...
A late night read, a learning experience for fantasy writers on how not to write.
I especially liked...
Angela the Herbalist. Her eccentricites were great. The story is something of a classic plotline and while it has its fair share of cliches, it is a fun read. There are some slow bits in the narration, but is relatively flowing.
I didn't like...
There are many character Mary-Sues and Marty-Stus and plot cliches in this book. The characterization could use some work and the entire theme is something of a rip off of Tolkien's epic 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. Then again, what fantasy isn't a rip off of LOTR these days?
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Read the next book to find out if it would get any better.
I recommend this Book because...
It is a good introduction to a young author's writing. For a first novel, it is pretty good and has a few enjoyable moments.
I don't recommend this Book because...
It is rather a flat read when compared to more developed books. The villan is eeeevvvvvilll just because he is eeeevvvvilll and has no reason for it. Many things "just happen" that make the way too easy for the main characters and Eragon seems to make no real sacrifice or suffer no real consiquence for his powers.
