Summary of this Book...
When editors take on a new manuscript, the errors addressed in The Broadview Book of Common Errors in English, are the ones most frequently seen. Covering everything from proper pronoun use to which parentheses to use, and how to avoid "over-talking" and using words to say what you really mean, it appears everything is covered here. Don LePan explains the subject without being pretentious and without making readers feel as though they have to be "stuffy" to write well.
This type of Book is good for...
writers, editors, teachers, students, web designers, and anyone else involved in the world of words.
I especially liked...
that it includes sections on MLA, APA, and Chicago styles of writing. I also loved the section at the back filled with exercises to help writers improve their writing skills.
The author of this Book...
Don LePan is a lover of words. He has written books on the psychological and sociological aspects of medieval times and Shakespearian plots on our current culture. He shows that proper word usage doesn't have to equal boring.
Further Comments...
From the book jacket: The book "offers full coverage of such common mistakes as comma splices, sentence fragments, words frequently confused, words frequently misspelled, mixed metaphors, and subject-verb agreement errors. In each case, the problem is clearly explained, with examples illustrating both the nature of the trouble and how to put it right. Unlike many guides, The Broadview Book refrains from dogmatism; it treats correctness in English not as an unchanging objective standard laden with moral overtones, but rather a code of convenience that is extraordinarily useful in helping humans communicate effectively and even elegantly. It thus retains an openness to the inevitable process of change in the English language."
