Summary of this Book...
"Washington Square" is a novel by Henry James. The novel's central character, Catherine, is not your typical heroine. She is quiet, humble, and mild - but these characteristics also become her strengths. At the center of the story is the conflict between Catherine's relationship with her father, and her relationship with the first man to ever claim to love her, Morris Townsend. After Catherine's father, Dr. Slopper, disaproves of her engagement to Morris, the two men turn to disliking one another, and forcing Catherine to choose, putting her in a very difficult position.
This type of Book is good for...
Anyone who enjoys reading the classics, or older styles of literature. Henry Jame's writing style is very beautiful, and the way he presents his characters is real and honest in such a way that it draws you into the story. This book is also great for bookclubs, as debates over each characters' strengths and weaknesses, or how the story could have been different if Catherine had a slightly different personality, etc., lead to some great conversations.
I especially liked...
The honest portrayal of Catherine. Too often authors will write their atypical characters in such a way as to almost appologize for them. Henry James makes no appologies - Catherine is how she is, and there is nothing wrong or weak about that.
I didn't like...
How some of the other characters treated Catherine, but this feeling is one the author intended you to have, and it in no way detracts from the story. On the contrary, I believe it serves to draw you in further.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Read more of Henry Jame's works.
This Book made me feel...
A little sad that things couldn't have gone differently for Catherine, but proud and happy that she stuck to her morals until the very end. No one could force her to be something she wasn't, and I admired that.
The author of this Book...
Is a wonderful writer. I enjoyed reading his style of writing very much. The dialogue especially was very good, and I believe he kept the story true to its time period.
I recommend this Book because...
It was a great book. It is unique in its choice of heroine, but I think that just makes it even better. It's a classic, and one that I think everyone should experience.
Further Comments...
If you get the chance (especially if you read this as part of a book club) I would also highly recommend watching the original movie based on the book, called "The Heiress." It was a very enjoyable movie, and remained true to the book and its characters. I felt it added to the experience of reading the book rather than detracting or altering it.
