Summary of this Book...
The Penelopiad is Penelope's version of events based on Homer's The Odyssey.

This is a behind the scenes look at what was happening in Ithaca while Odysseus was on his voyage. Penelope tells us what others have thought and what she says really happened.

The reader gets to see Penelope's opinions about her cousin, Helen of Troy, and about the gods whom all people feared. You get to walk in her shoes from her childhood to her death.

This is a great introduction to mythology. It could also be an aid in understanding Homer's epic work.
This type of Book is good for...
anyone whom might have an interest in mythology or The Odyssey.
I especially liked...
the manner in which the author intermingled the thoughts of the twelve maids with Penelope's thoughts. We get another view into the actions of the people at the time. This is often done in a poem format.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
read Homer's The Odyssey. I need to know more about Odysseus and his travels. I also want to know more about Penelope.
This Book made me feel...
inquisitive about the era and the myths. It is amazing how different one perspective can be from another, most commonly accepted truth.
The author of this Book...
is proudly Canadian. She does an amazing job with this tale while trying to keep the story possible within the framework of Homer's work.
I recommend this Book because...
if you have struggled with understanding myths and the interrelationship of all the gods and characters, this book makes things easier to understand.
Further Comments...
This book did not disappoint. Yes, I chose to read this because it is by a Canadian author. I enjoyed reading the book because of the quality. It is a fabulous experience to read an age old tale from a different perspective.

Add this to your "must read" list if Homer or mythology is of any interest to you.
