Summary of this Book...
The novel is set against the backdrop of Afghanistan which is at the same time a beautiful and a brutal land. The story is about two Afghan boys…Amir, who belongs to a rich and affluent family and his servant boy Hassan. It explores the relationship between these two boys and how Amir’s cowardice and Hassan’s devotion to his master help shape their destiny.

Amir’s father is disappointed in his son who shows no interest in soccer and buzkushi, two sports all Afghans are crazy about. To win his father’s approval, Amir vows to win a local kite flying tournament and asks for Hassan’s help. After their victory, Amir witnesses a brutal crime being inflicted upon Hassan but chose not to intervene so as to avoid getting hurt. This incident changes him forever. Later, Amir and his father have to flee to USA during the Soviet invasion and he never sees Hassan again.

Hassan who refused to give up his master’s kite when 12 years old, was shot dead while saving Amir’s house. After 26 years of guilt and insomnia, Amir finally has a chance to redeem himself and save Hassan’s son from a fate similar to that of his father. During this dangerous journey of redemption, Amir learns the truth about his father, his friend but above all, he finds peace.

This type of Book is good for...
Anyone who loves a strong plot, good characterization and above all a gripping story.
I especially liked...
Amir who is SO human. I love stories that make you fall in love with the protagonist in spite of his failings or weaknesses. Hassan's character is very well written too.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
read more of Khalid Hossieni's books.
This Book made me feel...
Sad and yet hopeful
The author of this Book...

I recommend this Book because...
It really tells a wonderful story about love, friendship, betrayals and above all redemption.
Further Comments...
The episode where Amir pelts Hassan with pomenegrates is especially poignant. A wonderful book. A must read.
