This is Khaled Hosseni's debut novel. It traces the story of Amir, the son of an affluent Afghani man and his friendship with Hassan, a lowly Hazara boy who stays in his household. It takes you on a journey that starts from peaceful Afghanistan (= Kabul) and over the years, to a strife-torn land ruled by the radical Taliban. However, it is not a historical novel per se. It is an account of boys who grow up into men with real feelings. It is a story of pain, of disloyalty, of cowardice, of realisation, and finally, of redemption.

Everyone who loves to read good books. It will appeal to almost anyone.

The beautiful language, the characterisation, the story of a country little understood by all of us, and the powerful tale that is woven by Hosseni.

In the middle, the story tends to become a bit slow, but it builds up momentum very swiftly.
