Edgar Allan Poe is considered the father of the mystery genre in books. Before him, most authors wrote novels about the society or its general condition at that time; others wrote fairy tales or Romance. The arrival of Poe signalled the arrival of the thriller and mystery genre in the world of books.

This compendium has not just the thrillers and mystery stories, but also the adventure stories, the poems and all other things that he wrote in his lifetime. This includes a large section devoted to humor and satire written by him and about 110 pages on "Flights and Fantasies".

The most famous of his works, viz. Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Tell-tale Heart, MS in a bottle, Fall of the House of Usher, etc. are all in the book; of course, the poem "The Raven" is also to be found.
