Summary of this Book...
"142 movies are covered in this book with a special added attraction about "Henry Hathaway and his movies." Some of the films detailed in this volume, complete with credits, release and background information, are Affair in Trinidad, Bitter Rice, The Blue Veil, Broadway Melody of 1940, The Browning Version, Carrie, The Cat and the Canary, Dancing Lady, Detective Story, Diplomaniacs, Fallen Angel, Flamingo Road, Gunga Din, Hindle Wakes, The Magic Box, Metropolis, Mr Denning Drives North, My Wild Irish Rose, On Moonlight Bay, Pandora and the Flying Dutchman, Phone Call from a Stranger, The Prisoner of Zenda, Queen Christina, and Cecil B. DeMille's original Ten Commandments.
This type of Book is good for...
all movie lovers, particularly of Hollywood's classic films of the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.
I especially liked...
the detailed coverage given to each of the 142 movies. Even a minor (though most entertaining) film like 1952's "Has Anybody Seen My Gal?" (true, it is directed by cult icon, Douglas Sirk) is given the full treatment: detailed cast list; detailed behind-the-camera credits; a synopsis; background notes, including the fact that it marked not only James Dean's first movie, but Sirk's first in color; and finally an admirable 400-word review.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
buy DVDs of many of the movies described.
This Book made me feel...
glad to be living at a time when most of this Hollywood wealth was available for home viewing.
The author of this Book...
is obviously both an expert and an enthusiast.
I recommend this Book because...
it is full of delightful insights. I enjoyed the illustrations too.
Further Comments...
The following review was written by C.K. Brown of New York City: The author and his fellow critics are very gifted in their analysis of classic American and British films. They really love these films--and I always get a kick out of their right choice of words. Did I agree with every review? Of course not. However I agreed 85-90% of the time!!! I used to get the separate issues of their old magazine. How fortunate, after 20 years, to be able to renew my acquaintance with these Aussie film fanatics. Their description of a film will make you want to track a print of the film and see it--for the heck of it!
