Summary of this DVD...
(5/9/2005) I just bought the "Blade: Trinity" Unrated Version the other day. Even though I didn't get to see it in the theater, I was eager to check it out. I noticed on this Unrated Edition that it also provides, through seamless branching, the R-rated theatrical version. Well, I watched the R-rated version, and I thought it was okay, but nowhere near the standard set by the previous "Blade" movies. Then I chose to watch the unrated version (which has an alternate ending), and I was very pleasantly surprised. The unrated version has about 10 extra minutes of character development, lending some much-needed soul to the movie. It is also re-edited slightly, so the story has a better pace. I can't really commend the R-rated version for much, but the unrated version of "Blade: Trinity" was pretty good.

However, I don't really think Wesley Snipes did a great job in either version. He's got the look, the cadence and the awesome weapons, but he seems to have left the character's personality (and make no mistake... even though Blade is supposed to be somewhat emotionally numbed, he DOES have a personality) at the door. I think this was a paycheck job for him. If you listen to the frequently amusing commentary track with David Goyer, Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds, they kind of make Wesley out to be a d--k... that is, of course, when they're not completely fawning over him.

So, bottom line: If you're a "Blade" fan, buy the Unrated Edition, or if you're a casual action junkie, then renting either version will do; just don't come in expecting the same caliber of Wesley Snipes you found in "Blade" 1 & 2.
