Summary of this Book...
Johnathan Turner visits a Couny Vladamir Dracula in the Carpathian mountains in order to help him purchase an estate in England. What happens at Dracula's mannor and the events thereafter have become one of the best-loved horror stories of all time.
This type of Book is good for...
Horror lovers, teens and up. The action is more subtle than many of today's novels but this book deffinitey deserves a place on the bookshelf of all bibliophiles.
I especially liked...
Dracula was a great vampire. No pre-teen drama, no angsting, he's just awesome. Dracula is scary, charming, vicious, intelligent, and all around an amazing character. He keeps the essence of what a vampire is and really embodies the monster side of the species.
I didn't like...
The female characters are annoying to me. As a whole, they are just victims and seen as silly things that need protecting. If the men listened to them they would be safer. There were some moments when you have to roll your eyes at what is going on, but all stories have a moment or two where if the characters had acted differently something could have been avoided. The fact that they make a stupid move is how we get a story.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Talk about it, share it... it's definitely a good novel for book clubs.
This Book made me feel...
Scared, sad, creeped out, excited, thrilled... it hold a lot of emotion.
The author of this Book...
Is an Irish genius.
I recommend this Book because...
It's one of those classics that never really ages. You can read this book and sink into that world even though we have cell phones and computers and all our technology today you still feel the dread of VanHelsing and his group as they stand alone against a demon.
I don't recommend this Book because...
Well, it is a classic so if you're not too interested in older writing styles then there are many remakes ofthis nivel and additions to it that you can read without knowing too much about Dracula.
Further Comments...
This is a novel that has been near and dear to me for years. It scared me as a child, yet it ignited my curiosity. It was a horror novel, but there were no severed limbs or brain-eatign gouls, just one monster who appeared so human. There's so many layers to this novel, it's a great read! There are 'modernized' versions but I'd still suggest the original novel and an updated one as a translator for some of the wording.
