This is a very, very, long book that follows the lives of about 20 different ladies and their families in the late 1800's. There are about 8 main characters though and the book tells the story of the town they live in through their association in a club they form to review great writers of history. The book covers about 70 years and is more of a life story than action-packed. It's a very satisfying read. It took the author over 50 years to complete this book!

I really enjoyed the characters and each one is unique yet totally believable. The story makes you laugh, cry, think, and I found it warm and humble.

There is a lot of American politics wrapped in the book as the politics at the time set the tone for the goings on in the town.

Humble and thankful for the century we live in now.

The author took 50 years to write this and finished it in a nursing home. She died shortly after it was published.

It reminds us of the quieter times of yester-year.

The politics can get boring in you're not an American.
