I am trying to see as many movies as possible that were released in 1939. This was (according to many) Hollywood's greatest year. It was a turbulent year in the world as it was when Hitler invaded Poland and really set in motion his horrific plans for world domination. So, it was a scary year to be making films, but some of the greatest ever were released that year, including Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Ninotchka, Stagecoach, The Women, and on and on.

This book goes through each one of the movies released that year and tells the reader something about each one and the circumstances behind the film. I think it is a wonderful book.

This author also did a book on Jean Harlow with another author that I think is spectacular. I bought this used, but it is like new and I am enjoying it immensely as I learn more about this amazing year in Hollywood history.

anyone curious about how films were made during the year Hollywood had more great films (that stood the test of time) than any other.

what I read about The Women, one of my all time favorite films. That alone was worth the cost of the book.

if you are interested in filmmaking and history, I think you will enjoy this book. It seems to be fair and not too gossipy, but there is a lot of scintillating tales to be read. I am very glad I made the purchase!
