Summary of this Book...
Breq is the sole remaining being of the starship Justice of Toren, able to see with but one pair of eyes in a fragile human body as opposed to those of numerous ancillaries, and to encounter a much diminished array of abilities in unfamiliar territory. But Breq has a goal that begins as a quest for revenge that, through interaction with past foes and new comrades, revelations and experience, morphs over time. Breq’s actions in this often hostile, ever unfamiliar, environment are woven in part of past encounters and interactions, both of others and her own (unique and ancillary) (some of which she would take back) and of new and rediscovered contacts and allies. Here we stop for fear of spoilers.
This type of Book is good for...
Fans and readers of space opera, expansive worlds of science fiction.
I especially liked...
The depth of the otherworld, classic space opera, making it easy for me to suspend belief and engage this universe of science fiction.
I didn't like...
What put me off - a bit of a slow start, introducing numerous characters and descriptive world building while going back and forth in present and history; but once immersed, it was a page turner.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Move on to the next book in the Imperial Radch books.
This Book made me feel...
Outside the mundane, glad to have read it.
The author of this Book...
I can see why she earned three awards for this debut novel. Creative and versatile writer, stayed true to the essence of the space opera sub-genre of science fiction.
I recommend this Book because...
It's a creative space opera, and the author makes it easy, once immersed, to suspend disbelief and engage the vivid otherworld.
Further Comments...
I see this as a 4.5 total rating, several in-depth characters, immersive worldbuilding, and just enough science to allow for suspension of disbelief in this engaging space opera.
