According the other reviews, this may not have been the best place to start reading Salvatore, but since I have nothing to compare it to in terms of his other work, I guess that's a good thing (?).

I really wanted to love this book. I didn't. In fact, it was nearly a 2-star (on Goodreads, that means "it was okay"). There's a few reasons why for the 2-star, and a few redeeming qualities that brought it up to the 3-star.

Here goes:

2-star:

The pacing. This isn't a difficult book to read, though it is lengthy. I took a day off in between because it was so boring that had to decide whether I was going to abandon it. I decided not to, and I'm glad I didn't, but there was so much repetitive filler in here that was completely unnecessary. Slooooooooow.

The feminist-not-feminist-wtf-this-makes-no-sense plot. spoiler ▼

The creature spoiler ▼ . Not only was it not scary, or even remotely bothersome, it was extremely annoying. spoiler ▼

47 POVs. I don't know, I didn't really count them. They had some depth, but not enough. It made it hard to really empathize with anyone in particular, even the MC. The best story in here was probably Talmadge's, and it became crushed under coincidence and tropy-ness.

Zero reader satisfaction at the end. There's no payoff to this at all. I'm sure there is in the series somewhere, but sadly I will never know because I'm not reading it.

3-star bump up:

Dude can write some serious battle scenes.

In spots, there is some beautiful writing. Much of it is in the battle scenes, but there's some that shines through in other areas.

First (actual) chapter (because there's a lot of BS before that) was great.

The last 70 pages or so was the strongest part of the book, and the final battle was really good, until there was no real ending and then I was just annoyed.

I guess the book is truly a 2.5-star for me. It falls somewhere between "I didn't actually dislike it in it's entirety" and "I have no idea why I finished this reading this".

TL;DR: The book is a big "meh" for me.
