After being out-of-the-country for a couple years, a young man returns to learn that the girl he loves has recently lost her grandfather.

When he sees her for the first time, she asks for his help, because despite appearances, she believes her grandfather did not die a natural death. He was murdered -- by someone in the house!

Police confirm murder by poisoning, and to find out the truth, the young man takes up residence in a house where everyone -- even the woman he loves -- could be the murderer.

Ruthlessness runs rampant through the Crooked House, and as secrets come to light, the murderer strikes again.

Another excellent mystery from Christie and another one with a satisfying reveal of the murderer. Not quite as surprising as The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (I suspected who this one was, though I wasn't certain), but satisfying, despite the severe justice at the end.

This book is one of the notable ones that does not include one of Christie's returning famous detectives. All the better for it, I think -- I can't imagine how this one would have turned out with Poirot.

I made the mistake of watching a movie based on this book after I read it. Just...no. Noir affectations, bizarre red mood lighting, and a mushroom cloud -- none of these belong in a Christie mystery, let alone this one.

Please, never judge a Christie mystery by the movie...
