Summary of this Book...
This book is a story about a young child, named Kya, who is abandoned by many people. Unfortunately, this leaves her to move through her life alone, living in the Marshes of North Carolina. The story began in 1952 and ended in 2009. It bounced around the years in between and portrayed an "as in real life" coming of age story. There are no princes on white Stallions or fairy-tale scenarios.

The story and characters came alive for me. It involved innocence, disappointment, heartache, perseverance, resiliency, acceptance, and love.

The setting in this story is absolutely breathtaking. Kya loves the marsh and learns oh so much about its inhabitants and in turn, learns a little about herself as well.
This type of Book is good for...
This type of Book is good for escaping into a natural world filled with excitement and adventure. The marshes are full of life. While learning about the marsh you also learned about how life must have been back in the 50s and 60s in North Carolina. I have never been to North Carolina, so I appreciated the gorgeous descriptions.
I didn't like...
I didn't like how much pain and heartache Kya endured. But it helped when I discovered that it wasn't all bad. There were happy times as well.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
When I finished reading this book I wanted to cry a little for Kya and Tate. But, in the end, I was happy with how everything turned out.
This Book made me feel...
There were all kinds of feelings I had throughout reading this book. I had such hope for Kya and her future. The story made me sad, angry, confused, and happy, too.
The author of this Book...
The author of this book, in my opinion, did a fabulous job, especially with this being her first fiction book.
I recommend this Book because...
I recommend this book for something a bit different than what you're probably used to reading.
Further Comments...
I would definitely not be opposed to reading the next fiction book Delia Owens writes.
