Summary of this Book...
This review doesn't contain any, but the book uses words for Mexicans that are now considered derogatory. They weren't specifically used in a negative way in the book most of the time. It appears they were perfectly acceptable words in general society at that time. But some people may find them triggering.

This book is listed as 276 pages though I listened to the audiobook, which was just under 9 hours.

This book is the sequel to John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, which I didn't even know had a sequel. I do recommend you listen to that one first. It's not absolutely required, but they do a rundown of what happened to all the characters from the other book in the meantime. I think it would be odd and annoying to listen to all that and have no idea who these people are.

The book takes place in Monterey, CA after World War II.

Doc returns from the war and tries to rebuild his dead business. Mack and the boys try to show him their appreciation for all he's done for them over the years, but without destroying his place like they did with the party in the book, Cannery Row. And the Bear Flag brothel has a new owner, Fauna, the former owner's sister. She tries to turn her girls into proper ladies so they can marry well, while still making money at the original business and she gets a new girl, Suzy, who she decides she knows the perfect mate for.
This type of Book is good for...
Fans of John Steinbeck and of his book Cannery Row. I do recommend reading Cannery Row before reading this, but I suppose it's not absolutely required, just highly recommended.
I especially liked...
The descriptions and the author's general writing style. I didn't realize how big a Steinbeck fan I was until I read Cannery Row.
I didn't like...
Language we now consider derogatory that was used to refer to the Mexican laborers. However, I did keep the time period in mind and got through it.
I recommend this Book because...
It's a great sequel to a wonderful book. I really enjoyed it.
