The best place for you to start is probably here: "Using Your Writing.Com Portfolio" 
From there, you can link your items to posts in the Community Newsfeed, which will give you the most visibility by other writers on WdC. (Your Personal Newsfeed will only show you things posted by writers you've made favorites, so you'll be limited for a while...I'll let someone else explain about fans and favorites, or my post will turn into a novel
