| There seems to be a trend toward offloading some or all of the marketing effort of a novel from the publisher to the author. I'm being told that I need to demonstrate some web presence as part of the query. So, I'm working on my "author platform". Any experiences with this to report?    What all methods have in common appears to be: keep a public blog that gets updated regularly. It'll be a single public blog where the info snippet is released on multiple platforms. eg: the same snip will be released on WdC, Twitter, Facebook, ... That way you can reach a wide audience and your followers can follow and reach you on their preferred news feedback platform. |

| There's an interesting article in Publisher's Weekly, "Writing Books Remains a Tough Way to Make a Living". This is presumably a survey of published authors. "…but the main takeaway is that most authors have a hard time earning a living from their craft." Cites a median gross income from the books themselves at about $2000 USD. You earn $2000/year or month or total? I know a lot of folks on here who haven't done that much total. I remember a few years ago, someone celebrated finally selling enough to break even. lol Good for them for even knowing what that number is.  You can post links. Use the ML code {link:PutLinkHere} using the curly braces, as always. And like any code here, no spaces in the code. You can also edit your Newsfeed note to add the link. Click the little arrow thingy in the upper right corner of your note. Click Edit Note. The edit box will appear below your note, above my comment. Edit and save. | The newsfeed is a good place to start. The problem is that your post will not be seen by many people. Only those who follow you see your posts automatically. Everyone else has to make an effort to choose the Community feed - but not all do it. You can offer a trade (your book is read and you read someone else's book in return) in "The Great Novel Review Exchange" You can try posting your novel in "Please Review" and "The Shameless "Plug" Page" . |
| Annette beat me to it. lol Wait, isn't there some page where people post their reviewing styles/prices and you choose one? I swear I saw that recently. If you mean on here, there's not a dedicated spot for that, but you could try Please Review or even the Auto-Reward Items sections (if you have the GPs for Auto-Reward Items). Unfortunately, you only have 6 fans. That means, it's likely that at most, only 6 people will see your Newsfeed posts.  I always encourage folks here to get out there, hang out on the Community Newsfeed and make friends. Friends often turn into fans. Also, you've fanned even less folks, though now I can't recall the number--2, maybe?  Some people here will automatically fan you just because you fanned them. If someone hasn't at least single clicked your plus (until they see the finger with the string and set you as a favorite, which you'll never even know about) or double clicked your plus (until the see the megaphone and set you as a favorite and you're notified), then they're not likely to see what you post. I see your posts because I hang out on the Community Newsfeed. But 99.9% of WdC only gets on their Personal Newsfeed. Literally, there's over a million members (though not all are active) and only like 5 of us get on the Community Newsfeed regularly.  I tell people to, but most don't listen.  On your Personal Newsfeed, which is the default when you click Newsfeed, you only see official WdC stuff and notes posted by people whose Plus you have clicked. On the Community Newsfeed, you see what everyone is posting (within your rating limit), not just what's going on in your tiny corner of WdC. The Community Newsfeed is a great way to find friends, discover activities from around the site, and find opportunities to either help others or get help from them.  But note that posting on the Community Newsfeed doesn't do anything. Still, people won't see it if they don't get on there and posting on your Personal Newsfeed appears on the Community Newsfeed for those of us who check it. I really encourage you to get on the Community Newsfeed and start making friends. Scroll, comment, Like, and socialize. When you find people you like, double click their plus. Some might fan you back. If you find activities you like, be sure to click the link and double click the plus in the upper right corner of the activity. Otherwise, you are only fanning the person, not the activity.  Good luck! |

The last post on the Novel Review exchange actually about novel review exchanges was 8 months ago. But seriously, my Newsfeed posts only get seen by people who have favorited me? I've been here a year and a half, and this is the first I've heard of this. |

| Just an honest suggestion: There is a certain amount on content on WdC that hasn't been updated in 5 or even >10 years in some cases. It clogs search results, and probably isn't doing anybody any good. Time for a cleanup? |
In general, if you put something on WdC, it stays. Now, if your membership isn't paid, only 10 of those things will remain, but they will remain. In fact, if your loved ones send your death certificate to WdC with a note containing your real name and username here (and a note saying what the death certificate is, if it's not in English), you can be turned into a white case and your membership level will forever remain the level it was when you were alive, possibly keeping all your things available for friends and family to view. An example is Lisa Noe  . To help with the search results, try changing the order of things from Most Viewed First (which can be a bit self-fulfilling lol) to Recently Modified First or Newest First. There are a variety of ways to sort, depending on what you're trying to do. I hope this helps!   |
| I can understand keeping people's writing permanently, but there are groups and other types of forums(-a?) that haven't been updated recently (saw an interesting group that was last updated in 2010) that kind of get in the way. I guess resetting the search parameters is the best option for now. |
| I've completed the rewrite of my novel: "The Confederation: Disunion" It's a story of love, faith, science, engineering, war, treachery, intrigue, politics, corruption, assassination, genocide, the collapse of civilization into darkness, and a faint hope of rebirth. It is 20 chapters, although several are much too long, and will have to be reorganized. I need feedback to determine if it's all been a waste of time, or not.
