So today... was a bit later leaving work and didn't want to fast walk down the hill to the train in the heat, so decided I'd take the bus. Coolio, the bus arrived and I'd have plenty of time at the other end to walk to the station. The bus turned right instead of left and I went, oh.... F.... brain was clearly asleep to read one bus number as another. Got off at first stop past the turn and end up speed-walking down the hill in the heat to the train. Just time for a toilet stop before joining the busy platform. The train's never in early so that's fine but as I head to the platform I hear my line mentioned in chat to a train worker on another line and I think.... hmmm. But.... hey, still time for train to come in. We're all standing there (200 people?) and there's an announcement: stand by but at least know there's a delay. Not long after that - train is cancelled due to operational error (error??? WTF????) So moral of the story..... just jaunt slowly down the hill, stop in at five shops and even go buy a coffee, cause your best laid plans for getting home early are JUST A JOKE! |
Sounds like public transport in England, I feel your pain! |
Your example of public transportation efficiency is duplicated daily in America's big cities. Public trans is hard, no matter the city. That's why we stupid Americans love our cars so much. The wife and I have four; she has her car, I have my pickup, there is a spare just in case, and one is on loan to my daughter-in-law for my grandsons. |
Joey's Spring has Sprung - I spent a month in Chicago back in 2018 researching my novel. I was so in love with the city's public transport. So many times cheaper and better than my own city's. Though.... I did walk from North Shore up to Evanston because why not? Definitely didn't walk back! |
January's prompt on the Happy Anniversary calendar is: what is the best excuse for being late that you have ever used? I have two: 1 - sorry, I'm just getting back from the doctor's after being seen for a dog bite (thankfully which did not need stitches but, man, was the bruise impressive) 2 - sorry, there are horses running about free in my street that I have to help corral (this was just before being on an interview panel. I did send a photo as proof ) What excuses have you had? |
"Sorry I'm late. I didn't want to come." - saw this on a t-shirt and love the accuracy, lol. Yours are 100+! |
When I lived up north, I had a job that for some reason I had a record of being chronically late. One morning, during a major snowstorm I arrived late for work. My boss asked me why I was late again. I explained that the streets were slippery and for every step I took forward I slid back two steps. "Well, then," he asked. "How did you make it to work at all." "I turned around and began walking home," I explained. |
There are so many...most recently was, "sorry, my front door was frozen shut." |
Happy new year everyone. We're already 18 hours in here in New Zealand, on a lovely sunny summer's day. This contest is now open for January:

Thinking of opening this one for January. Will there be any takers?
|
I listed you on "Contest Clues" as opening in January, so I guess you're opening in January. Just kidding. I did list you, but it's up to you. I'll check the contest's status before I list it as open. |
I forgot. If you open it, drop me a line and I will add it to my Contests & Activities newsletter that comes out on January 3. |
Writing a gangster with a nice side isn't that easy. My guy has just taken in his dead sister's teenage son because he agreed ages ago to look after him if something happened to her! He's more nice guy than gangster at the moment!!! Now I'm gonna have to get him to kill someone to bring the gangster back! The efforts we go to for

So here in New Zealand it's winter - and people are being surprised a cold snap and snow as if it's not normal. Also - good luck to anyone doing this month's official contest - writing song or poem lyrics about one's self. Eeek, I'm running a mile!!! |
QPdoll - is Heartstopper really that good? I was going to watch it when it first hit Neflix and then it got 'famous' and I decided not. (Something that is a habit of mine, you know, hate to get on the bandwagon.) |
Osirantinous this wouldn't normally have been on my radar to watch, but my daughter watched it and loved it. She insisted I watch it, so I did. Now, I'm looking forward to the new season. |
The Aucklanders are no longer surprised by rain. We have forgotten what sun looks like. |
Shake off the cobwebs, people!!!! It's coming back......

Feeling proud of myself. After failing to cut word count on a story for March's Short Shots, I've managed to write something for Quotation Inspiration. Wheeeee. Looked back to the last time I entered one of the official contests - just a short while ago in 2015!!! Yikes. Hat's off to those of you who enter all the time!!!! |
