I like the soliloquy which gives this a distinct human feel to it. The language has it palpable to anyone who has been presented in meeting death at any time in their life.

I believe it would be a more resounding piece were it broken up into more distinctive parts of his dialog. I see it working with some paragraph structuring to have the lines stand out rather than become a stew.
