This is an excellent story. The grammar is perfect and the writing is simple and straightfoward. However, you might try describing the men more and giving the tree a bit more of a background story. Also, I think the part where the tree actually dies should be extended a little bit for effect. Blunt narration can be powerful, but imagery can be useful, too.
