There's a lot to work with here. I like the immersion and the characters, but it feels a bit hazy. As the reader, I'm not sure where you're leading me. I think this could benefit a lot from anything that assists the reader with understanding a focused moral. This is very good imagination though.

You really wrote the review of the wisdom being communicated by the story yourself. I agree, and there's something to be said about an admirable character's efforts despite the futility of circumstances. Everyone has to start somewhere, and not making the seemingly insignificant move is almost always going to be worse.
