I enjoyed the story very much. I was at times spellbound by the mystery of the sound and equally embarrassed for this sad sack. Having served more than 20 years in the service, I have actually encountered goofy people like this. Often as a supervisor, it was my responsibility to square things with a company or service provider on behalf of the moron. I really wanted to slap this guy around. The only real drawback for me was the last pages where I expected to find out what made that exasperating noise. Predictably, this guy is a total screw up with need for a mental health day or two. But the ending was also predictable. Otherwise, It was worth my time to read your short story.
