Courage, it is said, is not an absence of fear but one overcoming one's fear. This poem reminds me of that saying. "Though fear may gnaw inside each breast no outward sign brave men show." Standing in the face of fear, not running away, is the presence of courage. Good stuff.

I can see the "sweltering hothouse" filled with tomatoes bound for the inside of cans of Campbell's tomato soup. The movement to the outside of the can is slick. A raging bull coming after the outside, the red Andy Warhol designed can. I can say that much but I still don't really know what I am reading.

As I read this poem two things came to my mind. First, while Christ does restore us, of that there is no doubt, Genesis 2:2-3 points to the importance of rest. "On the sixth day God completed all the work that he had done, and on the seventh day God rested from all the work that he had done. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all the work of creation." If God, who is infinite in power took the time for rest, it can only point toward the importance for rest for finite creatures like us. Second, I was reminded of Paul's words to the Philippians, chapter 4, verse 13, "I can do all things through him who strengthens me." While rest is important, you are right in that without the power of God in our lives our power is limited but with the power of Christ, we can do all things.
