I can actually write my own piece on this piece. LOL! I can write a damned BOOK on this subject and I'll tell you WHY : I am one of those people.

Just because I find myself lucky enough AT THIS VERY MOMENT to have finally landed a temporary assignment at a company that HAPPENS to have Internet, does not take away the fact that I've been exactly the people you are writing about, for most of my life! It is fair enough to give change to those who look terribly abused, but there is yet another injustice that nobody seems to address.

When I was living in the gutters, I never used drugs and sold my body to survive. I had the decency to go to public restrooms to wash my hair with their soap when it got greasy and I had the self-respect not to fall into filth because I had nothing left in the world.
Said injustice is that those normal (lucky) people only help those who look like hell. Nobody wanted to help me. Instead, I was scolded for "making fun of poor people, because I "obviously have an education and I dress decently" !!!

Little did they know that those were my ONLY clothes and that I had been starving for days on end. The drunken vagrants got food and change, but I got chased away and I was called "shameful" for moving in on poor people's territory. I just came out of two years of this...WITH my two children and it's wonderful that you aired this subject, but those of us who refuse to lose our self-respect ---- Who ever helps us?

Thank you for this thoughtful article. It addresses a valid point and I hope it calls attention to those oblivious to the plight of the innocent.
