Its a good beginning to your story. In my opinion, I think you use the word 'that' a bit much. I believe I saw almost 30 uses of the word. Its one of the things I constantly look for when I review my own pieces. So far so good...on to your next chapter. I can't wait to see how your characters develop through the story.
