A wonderfully written story, suddenly connecting the past and the present at the end, an unexpected surprise to me, but it works. Despite the story being a short story I felt invested in the characters, you were able to create feeling for them in a minimal period of time. I found myself rooting for the underdogs, wanting them to defeat the great Alexander but also knowing it was probably not to be. A great job of character building and a great story overall.
I enjoyed this short story, it is well written and has a mysterious air about it until the end when we find out what happened. The little girl, alone in the diner, illuminated by the one light, conjures all kinds of ideas about what could be going on and creates suspense. It allows the reader to use their imagination which is wonderful. I almost wish we didn't find out what happened at the end to give it that big mysterious cliffhanger, but overall this piece is well done.
